PAUL GORTON

Paul Gorton is an independent consultant with extensive experience in the development of high value aerospace, defence and commercial information management systems. He has helped clients to achieve improved business performance in the aerospace, insurance and publishing sectors. His knowledge and experience are particularly relevant to complex, technology-based businesses and programs.

Prior to starting his consulting business in 2009, he spent most of his career with Vancouver-based MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates Limited (MDA). He joined MDA in 1991, became Manager of Research and Development in 1993, Director of Engineering in 1995 and General Manager of MacDonald Dettwiler Limited in the UK in 2000. He was appointed to the position of Vice President and General Manager of the company’s Systems Division in 2002. From 2006 to 2009, he was responsible for specific strategic initiatives in the Information Systems area as Vice President, Strategic Development.

As Vice President and General Manager, Systems Division, he was responsible for the management of the group, which had a staff of around 400, delivering a wide range of information systems, mainly for surveillance and defence applications.

As General Manager of MacDonald Dettwiler Limited in the UK, he was responsible for the establishment of the company’s real estate information business (the UK National Land Information Service) which is now in full commercial operation. The National Land Information Service federates over four hundred widely differing government information systems and provides “one-stop-shop” access for users (mainly solicitors) via a retail internet portal.

As Director of Engineering he led the development of the long term engineering capability of the company as the company transitioned to new activities in information services and products. He was responsible for the company’s Engineering Department, which included corporate Research and Development, the Computing Services Department (which provides the IT infrastructure for the company) and Engineering Services Department and was responsible for the definition of the company’s engineering processes and standards and their application to the company’s projects.

Prior to his appointment as Director of Engineering, he held the position of head of Research and Development and championed the introduction of many new technologies, including novel sonar target detection techniques, image fusion, medical applications of company technology and new internet applications.

During his time with MDA, he was closely involved with many of the company’s major projects and sales.

Before joining MDA, he worked for Litton Systems (Canada) Limited on the development of airborne radar systems for maritime surveillance and systems for precise aircraft positioning. He previously worked for Systems Designers plc (now part of EDS) in the UK in the area of remote sensing and signal processing. Paul Gorton was Chair of the Board of Directors of the British Columbia Technology Industry Association from 2009 to 2011 and has a PhD in Automatic Control from the University of Manchester, UK.
